Is Low Carb Right for You?

Losing weight effectively doesn’t have to involve huge changes in your lifestyle or diet.  Making small changes you can stick with over time is your best bet to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle.  Some of those changes might be cutting down on the amount of highly processed carbohydrates in your diet. Eating more whole foods will improve your health.  Highly processed foods are devoid of nutrients which our bodies need for optimum performance.  Making small changes in your diet like replacing highly processed pastas with a low carb pasta or whole wheat pasta can help you lose weight slowly and keep it off. Low carb rotation diets are very popular now allowing you to quickly lose weight without denying yourself carbs all together.  Eating low carb for two days then upping your carb intake on the third day essentially tricks your metabolism into burning more and more of your fat.  Using this strategy you can lose the weight you want without giving into those carb cravings that sabotage those of us that try to stick to a strict low carb diet plan. The beginning phase of most low carb diet plans involve what is known as “induction” where you have to severely restrict your carb intake to achieve “ketosis” in which the body burns fat reserves instead of carbs as energy thus causing you to lose weight.  At some point most people reach a plateau where you are still restricting your carbs yet you are not losing weight at the same rate.  You either have to cut back even more or trick your body into thinking you are.  That’s where carb rotation comes into play, tricking your metabolism into burning more fat. There has been some controversy over the low carb lifestyle lately.  Some claim it’s unsafe and causes high cholesterol and other problems.  Do you need to practice a low carb lifestyle in order to lose weight? No, you don’t.  Ideally we all would eat healthy and exercise adequately enough to maintain our weight easily, but we know that’s not the way we all live our lives. Living a low carb lifestyle is maybe not ideal for optimum health, the jury is still out on that debate, but living with obesity can be even more of a risk.  Heart disease, diabetes and stroke these are all attributed to obesity in general.  If  we could all eat right and exercise it wouldn’t be an issue but we all don’t always do what’s best for us.A low carb lifestyle may not be the best choice but maybe it could be the lesser of two evils. Try making some small changes to your lifestyle to make your life a healthier and longer one.  You should not only make changes to your diet but also add more exercise to your life.  Park further away from the door when shopping so you have to walk, take the stairs, go for a walk after dinner.  All these little things add up and can improve your quality of life.
